I have a farm in Southwestern Ontario.

I'm trying to set it up as a rural retreat. If nothing bad happens then it will be a nice place to visit.

If TSHTF then it would be nice to be part of a prepared community. I'm looking for people to be a part of that community, either as prepared people living as tenants/sharecroppers on my farm, or as prepared people living on one of the many nearby properties that are currently forsale in that area.

Anyone living on my farm would be expected to be able to pay their own way, either by buying, or making (where possible) what they need:

• shelter (either a small building, or an RV, or ...)
• sufficient firewood to heat your shelter for at least a year
• small storage buildings: root cellar, grain storage, tool storage, outhouse
• sufficient food (grains/etc) to last a year for everyone that is part of your family/group, plus extra in case family members/friends unexpectedly show up
• if you are not close enough to the pre-existing wells, or the pond, you should probably put in a well
• sufficient non-hybrid seeds to be able to grow enough food to feed you when your stored food is used up
• tools/books/etc that you need for gardening/etc
• put up fencing around the area that you will be gardening, and where you will be keeping animals (chickens/etc)
• rifles/shotguns/ammo/etc for hunting/etc purposes
• whatever else you require for self-sufficient living

Since most of the building will be done before TSHTF, it will have to be done in the current zoning climate. Small buildings that are less than 100 sq.ft. in size do not require permits, which is why I mention several small storage buildings. RVs are ok as shelter.

I am envisioning something that would look like a small village.

My farm has a pond, house, barn, apple trees, etc.etc.etc. However, it hasn't been worked in a long time, and is in rough shape. I am working on correcting this situation. Compensation for living on my farm could be helping me fix the farm up, or giving me necessary equipment, or ...

I am building an Eco demonstration centre called EARTH WALK to demonstrate green technology at work in domestic environments and we have been designing an Eco village to demonstrate sustainable community systems and at the same time create some community survival technologies and resources.

Our land is limited at this piont we have only about 10 acres but it is very rich land half hardwood bush and half cleared. We have developed two acres of organic gardens a green house, work shop and a log building "lodge" for accomidation. We are building solar panels for additional heating and a root celar. We have just finished our electric tracter and almost finished an electric car.

We have not yet developed a shelter solution other than the basement of the lodge. I would be interested in your input in this direction.

We also started a commuity barter network in Northumberland called LETS Trade modeled after the very succesful LETS system in Peterborough. By the way there now seem to be over 1000 LETS systems around the planet.

The largest and most advanced (and perhaps also oldest - almost 20 years old) Survival Community. It is a completely pluralistic community, with a membership of various religions and Christian denominations (and also some agnostics). It is also culturally diverse as to nationality and race and has no political or cultic agenda.

The survival complex is located adjacent to a village in rural Ontario, 90 miles northwest of Toronto, Canada. Members of the community can live elsewhere and have membership as a haven to which to retreat in case of emergency.

Except during emergency, people do not live in the survival complex itself, but can own or rent their homes in the nearby surrounding area. Different members have different Millennialist concerns ranging through Y2K, Earth Changes, Nuclear, and so forth.

I am not listened to!...
I wrote to the Mayor a letter that has been also published in the local newspaper, saying that the City should help organize community prep. in case of problems related to Y2K. The City answered that if such problems occur ( lack of food, petrol, elctrcity,) the provincial and federal governents will take care of it. And the City will do the same thing that it did during the recent ice storm.

I also wrote an article for the union of workers for the City of Montreal ; I don't know if it will be published due to elections in the union.

I will do an exhibit on sustainable development and the Y2K, in november, in our local Library, with lectures by Global Millenium Foundation among others.

All this is in French...

I tried to do a radio on our community radio but my project has been refused.

I am trying to find a ham radio powered with solar energy.

If denial is too strong, I am planning to go see the Army ( we have Army at the airport) to ask for help. Something like this:

Therah Village Community on Galiano Island in British Columbia's Gulf Islands has been in operation for more than 15 years. Here is a brief description:

Canadian readers (and Americans willing to relocate to Canada) may want to consider the Gulf Islands in British Columbia for their Y2K retreat. The Gulf Islands have a relatively mild winter, and a rural community lifestyle. They are part of the same chain as the State of Washington's San Juan Islands. There is regular ferry service to Vancouver on the mainland, and to Victoria on Vancouver Island.

Therah Village is a cooperative community on Galiano Island. The community is comprised of 30 shares, each owned by one to four adult shareholders.

We are self-sufficient for water and wood, with a large agricultural area and an orchard. Several members are very Y2K aware, and we are preparing as best we can. We have two or three memberships available for sale or partnership.

Each member has a 1.5 acre building site suitable for a dome, mobile home, rv, camper, cabin, teepee or yurt for living facilities. You would also have as large a plot in the community garden as you wish to cultivate; miles of walking trails (half hour walk to an ocean beach); plenty of firewood; and well water.

Mission : To assist and encourage local people to take shared responsibility for aiding and supporting each other on the streets and in the apartments where they live, both in preparation for possible disruptions caused by the Y2K computer bug, and as a long-term foundation for greater community self-reliance.

Goals :

(1) To establish and train a network of 5000 Street Volunteers in the Capital Region District, each of whom would build a self-help support network among their neighbours on the street or in the apartment block where they live, in co-operation with the existing networks of community volunteers, earthquake preparedness volunteers, Blockwatch volunteers and Neighbourhood Watch volunteers.

(2) To nourish the instinct for self-help and mutual support among neighbours, strengthen and encourage people's capacity to care for each other, and build a strong sense of community at the street level.

(3) To undertake pro-active street-level preparation and reassurance against possible Y2K disruptions, assist the existing emergency preparedness organizations in their work, and provide local residents with the means to address local issues and opportunities on the streets where they live.

(4) To facilitate social and environmental change.

Study Circle : A circle of 12 people preparing to become Street Volunteers, led by a trained facilitator.

Street Volunteer : The leader of a Street Circle on the street or in the apartment where he or she lives.

Street Circle : A circle of residents from approx 25 houses or apartments who meet together to prepare mutual support for Y2K and other situations or opportunities, assisted by the Street Volunteer.

We are a 47-year-old community which was originally established as a gathering together of people involved in a spiritual network called the Emissaries of Divine Light. After some 40 years of living to-gether, economically supporting each other, eating together, looking after each other's children, gardening, milking cows ... we have now seen the line between commune and community blur. We now find ourselves in a new place. We're older and wiser, fewer in numbers, and more interested in living in a community than living communally; cooperative community is the concept we are in the process of defining.

I haven't got a group, but you are welcome to give my e.mail address to any other British members you may have. Also, I will pass on to you anything I can find here (fact, not rumour) which would be of interest to British readers. For instance, the Channel Tunnel will be closed before midnight on New Year's Eve because the authorities do not want any possibility of trains stopping in the Tunnel due to Bug-breakdown; also, Luton Airport (a mainly charter airport slightly to the northwest of London) will be closing down at 4 p.m. our time on New Year's Eve. I have heard the same of Heathrow but cannot confirm it at this time. Both the above pieces of news came from recent editions of The Daily Telegraph, London.

I have created amongst the group a training/crosstraining program of skills , crafts, and trades. Each and every member has skills that are valuable to the group as a whole and as part of the membership each person has to cross train other members from each four man cell in his personal craft so should he become injured etc someone else can at least carry on with the others craft. ( these are mainly based around agriculture,health care,engineering,animal husbandry,education,and security/comms.

I design and impliment survival life skills planning and lifestyle adjustments tailored to the individual needs of each member/family according to there need/skills and financial status,enabling them to be more prepared for any given crisis without major disruption to there present lifestyles,(some go at it with more enthusiasm than the others) then at least three times every two years I get them all together to put into practise what they have learned (they find it difficult sometimes to work and live together operationally and under pressure) I am sure you have the same problems with the folk at the ark all working together for a common goal.

It has been my main form of income (its about the only thing I am very good at) I have been practising survivalism /self reliance for over twenty years now and there always appears to be more and more people wishing to be less and less reliant on the state and society and are wanting to lead better prepared lifestyles.

We are active across the UK and have been active since 1978 when we kicked off as a nuclear war survival group, we now try to be ready for any crisis be it natural or manmade. We welcome contact with all other family/community based groups

We are moving to Central America, (Nicaragua because of the low expense for land and food), and although we don't know of anyone else here in the states that is planning on moving to that particular location, we see that there are mind boggling opportunities for profit making enterprises even if it isn't needed for long term world upheaval/survival haven.

We have already set up a holding company so that if anyone wishes to come to the country, they can operate a business/venture with all the rights and priviledges of a natural born citizen of the country. The political people are encouraging any kind of investment from outside the country to strengthen the infrastructure and are making all sorts of valuable concessions in terms of duty free importation of tools, machinery, household goods, etc. etc..to entice folks to invest in Nicaragua. We have good connections there and will share them with any interested people. All the "computers", embedded and otherwise in Nicaragua all eat beans and tortillas and respond to requests!! Except for the banking from OUTSIDE the country, and the telephone system, (which is "state of the art"), Nicaragua shouldn't have any trouble with Y2K. A lot of Engish is spoken, and no one should have a problem with language. It is a beautiful fertile country with endless natural resources and a fairly firmly established democratic government. It is Costa Rica of 25 years ago! Also the banking laws and regulations are the most strict in the world today, as with Costa Rica. They release NO information to other countries, people, etc..
