This is the nuclear target map for Colorado, but remember, fallout can go anywhere or everywhere (and probably will). After you have looked at this map look at the Information for Colorado that follows it.

DENSE PACK - Look at all those target sites. So close Together! It serves a purpose. It is missiles protecting missles, and this is how it is done. These are "hardened" sites. Meaning it takes a direct ground explosion to dig them out. An air burst will not do it. When you have a ground explosion it throws many tons of dust and sand up into the air. High into the air. This is what will later become fallout carried by the winds hundreds, sometimes thousands, of miles away. But right over that site that has just been hit the sand and grit in the air is very thick for quite a while. Another high speed missile (ICBM) trying to come through it will have its skin torn off just like by sand blasting and it will be destroyed. So the other missile sites nearby are safe. On the other hand, because missiles take off much slower than the speeds they eventually reach, the missiles in the undamaged silos can still be launched and will pass through the dust cloud without be harmed. Neat, eh? See there is a purpose in putting so many in one place. Now the only way that you can dig them out is with what is called a slow walk. Hit a target. Move on further and hit another target where the dust from the first won't hurt you. Come back thirty or forty-five minutes later and hit a second target near where you hit the first, after the cloud has had time to blow away. A slow process. Some silos will already have launched and you will waste the shot. Others can still wait to launch later because you can only get one at a time. This could go on for days. Neat. The military missiles protecting missiles. But they don't protect you, because if you are downwind you will get the fallout. Fatal if you are not in a shelter. They call it Defense but it is only Destruction. Nothing here defends or protects you, if they are used.

Here's an idea/sensation that appeared to us on Yom Kippur.
Contributing to this idea is our growing sense that:
~~community folk are taking the lead on Y2K preparedness. Groups and efforts are springing up at an exponential rate.
~~No one is waiting for leadership from traditional sources, but everyone simultaneously recognizes that we need leadership to step forward.
~~ the people who try to work on behalf of these communities, such as foundations, public interest groups, local, state and federal officials, have no idea what's going on at the community level.
~~we're all frustrated by the lack of official leadership here, at every level.
~~ Y2K still needs much greater visibility/education/awareness etc.
~~ the model of web petitioning demonstrated in Ben Levi's recent web-based petition to govt leaders to get on with serving the public interest
So. . .
What if we quickly developed a "We the people" campaign, where we circulate a web petition, maybe a hard copy petition, maybe a full page ad in the NYTimes. This petition would be a plea from all of us who are already working on Y2K community/social preparedness, asking our "leaders" to join us. We would give them a sense of the multiplicity of efforts going on, the growing numbers of citizens involved, and ask them to please work with us. We would list at least part of the numerous community-based websites on-line now.
We would be soliciting leaders in the spirit of Churchill's famous quote along the lines of "There go my people. I must follow them. I'm their leader."
Y2K is a social problem, and we the people are on the case.

This Survival Community is just forming. Their philosophy seems very similar to ours as regarding membership. They are in the process of selecting an actual location, and I don't believe they plan to build a shelter complex anything similar to ours.

Located on 65 acres high on a Western Colorado mesa with wondrous 360 degree view of mountains, valleys and canyons. An ecological cluster of 10-15 member-built domes, strawbale or earth homes of sensible size. We are a nature-based spiritual community, with the primary focus based on the deepest essence, respect and honoring of all life. Seeking self-supporting core members who desire rural, spiritual environment, working together on biodynamic farm, utilizing permaculture applications. Your own business, or work in nearby towns. Diversity in thought and age, consensus decision-making results from mutual respect and trust. This land offers a strong American Indian heritage, and we foresee many tribal celebrations and learning experiences. We will employ solar, hydro and wind power wherever possible. Our own orgnaic crops will provide the evening community meal.
Structures will occupy less than 10% of total land space, with remainder in a conservation easement. Two former airplane hangars to be converted into community center and shop. A private earthen landing strip awaits a community decision for use. Community center will house shared evening meals, holistic therapies, child and elder care. Future retreat/learning activities will bring in spiritual teachings, as well as holistic home building and farming techniques.
$25,000 for membership (less for core membership), plus cost of home. Monthly assessments. Call or write for Community Plan and complimentary 2-month newsletter subscription. Non-commercially produced video - $10.

Interested in joining a survivalist community in the Colorado Springs/Pikes Peak area. Non military, no guns and weapons. Spiritual based, organic farms, alternative energy, Earth Changes shelters.
We are seeking only the preservation of life in our family and those with a strong sense of peaceful cooperation. In our search we are finding that control, fear, and animosity are the driving force of many, which will in turn only put us in a situation reasonably the same as which we seek to remove ourselves. The basics of our goals are to find land in a safe area of the Colorado Mountains , build safe homes such as dome homes, establish greenhouses, Natural energy, water sources and supplies, establish an underground or well protected Library of important knowlege for future development of our skills mentally and physically, food and supply storage, with the prospect of peace and safety being our main focus.
