We are focusing on our islands food supply, and working with all the major food retailers and wholesalers to identify the approximate amount on the island at any given moment. The Kauai Food Bank has just joined (The Director state that directly and indirectly the Kauai Food Bank feeds 15% of Kauai's population. This was a staggering fact brought up at the last Task Force Meeting (Meets with the Mayor and/or administrative assistant every other Tuesday). The Task Force already includes, all county Departments, plus Military, Fire, Police, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Hospitals, Banks, Hospitality Association, 2 citizens liaisons, DOT, etc. we are getting a lot done but there is still a lot to do.

The Community Self Reliance Cooperative is working with the Warden of our local prison, and several larger landowners in the development of community gardens. Working with the in-mates of the KCCC prison, (and modeling after the prisons own amazingly farsighted in-house sustain ability program) we will be creating community gardens and backyard gardens throughout the island. The Mayor has already given the CSRC to develop a pilot program of door to door disaster education and Y2K preparation in one neighborhood. Depending on success, the Mayor's office, the Task Force and the Community Self Reliance Cooperative will implement the model across the island.

Kauai will be warm during the onset of the New Year, but we import 95"% of our goods from off island and out of state. Because of this we are putting a high degree of focus on Food Storage and Garden Preparation on Kauai. We (The Community Self Reliance Cooperative, and the Mayor's Task Force have done all of this without any money!)

I know that many if not all of you come from bigger towns and are much farther along. I am not tooting our horn here, but rather we hope that Kauai can offer help as a model to smaller under budgeted communities. We look forward to anyone's thoughts on our proposed media focus on the island, as well as the questions that will be distributed door to door. below, find what we are up to as of 1/26/98.

I am part of a new Maui Prepare for Y2K group. We've had two major meetings: The first one brought 130 folks to our 'word-of-mouth and email buddies' meeting. Most were not knowledgeable about Y2K and came to find out what to expect. There were several speakers including Arthur Young who was visiting from California - and who gives seminars about Y2K in CA. Another speaker was Lori Grace - also from California visiting her Maui home. She discussed her efforts in California to get the utilities to 'move' on compliancy.

I am preparing to give public seminars on Y2K - to help mobilize our island towards preparedness. I am also taking a committee to speak with our outgoing mayor of Maui and enlist her efforts in unifing the Hawaiian islands in a massive effort to become self-sustaining ... since I believe we will not have air or boat delivery of food items after 1999

. Believing that 'you are not prepared unless your neighbor also is prepared' (ie: if you are prepared and your neighbor is not, then you must either share what you have with that neighbor - and perhaps both perish - or expect that he will come and take what he needs to survive) - we in the Hawaiian Islands must join together to feed our population when we are 'cut off from the rest of the world'.

If I were to 'name' my efforts regarding Y2K, I would consider: ALOHA 2K.
