The St. Francis Community was founded by Lucy Poulin in 1976. It is a place where people live together, homestead like stewards of the earth, provide shelter and form community with the neediest. They work as volunteers at H.O.M.E.
In 1983, the St. Francis Community joined the Sanctuary Movement. In 1986, they joined Emmaus International. Some have come here seeking to take the gospel seriously. Some have come because they have no other place to go. Some have come because they want to work to make our world a better place for all of us to live. Some have come because they need help and care.
We work at carpentry and the construction of new homes. Some help clean up woodlots and gather firewood. We make balsam fir wreaths to sell, and we teach and work with work horses. We repair homes for elderly people who cannot afford to hire work done. We work in recovering the value of things and at times we work not by the value per hour but by the necessity of the work and the needs of the people.
Monday through Friday mornings we have prayer service and breakfast together. Mondays and Wednesdays we have a supper, a scripture reading, and currently a Spanish lesson as well.
On Saturdays we work at the farm repairing dwellings, cutting and fitting up firewood, and working with the horses. On Sundays we honor a day of rest.
Though we have lived here for 10 years, this is the first time we have had electricity, and in one dwelling, running water. Most of our houses are still without basic facilities, but we live in a very beautiful place overlooking Toddy Pond. For the people here, it is a good place to live. We have very rich French intensive gardens that produce fresh vegetables, squash and pumpkins, a struggling orchard has begun, and the chickens, ducks and geese have a small new barn. Five cats have come to live in my household and I have grown fond of all of them, but have sent them all to family planning.
We take much inspiration from the prayer of St. Francis:
Dear God make us instruments of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let us sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light and
Where there is sadness, joy.
Loving God, grant that we may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love,
For it is in giving that we receive,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
H.O.M.E. Inc., established in 1970 as a craft cooperative, is a
multi-faceted organization involved in economic reconstruction
and social rehabilitation. In its 26 years of existence, it has
grown from the single retail store where home crafters could sell
their goods into a small community offering jobs, food, education,
temporary shelter and home ownership to people and families in need.
H.O.M.E. has seen from its beginning days that although the ownership of a home is of fundamental importance to a family, other services are needed to ensure family stability and foster self-esteem. In response to these needs, its activities have grown to include:
The more the needs of low-income people have grown, the greater has been the response of H.O.M.E. in making the case for a different kind of world for them.
